Windows XP VPN Setup Instructions |

The following describes how to setup a vpn connection under Windows XP.
Note that you will need to substitute your real <servername> where approriate.
Create a New VPN Connection by clicking "Start, then Settings, then Control Panel.
Doubleclick on "Network Connections".
Doubleclick on "Add New Connection Wizard".
Click "Next".
Choose "Connect to the Network at My Workplace" and click "Next".
Choose "Virtual Private Network Connection" and click "Next".
Type an appropriate "Company" Name and click "Next". (e.g. "CyberPro VPN")
Select "Do not Dial the Initial Connection" and click "Next".
Type in your hostname or IP Address. This is the name or address of the server you are attempting to connect to. Note that it will be different for different systems, your System Administrator can give you the details. Click "Next".
For ease of use later tick the option to create a Desktop Shortcut and click "Finish".
You will now see the initial connection window. Before connecting though, we want to tweak a couple of advanced settings. Click on the "Properties" button.
Then click on the "Security" Tab.
Untick the option "Require Data Encryption (disconnect if none)".
Then click on the "Networking" tab. You should see that the "TCP/IP" line is already highlighted. If not click on it and then click the "Properties" button.
Then click on the "Advanced" button.
Untick the option "Use Default Gateway on Remote Network". This stops all your traffic going down the vpn tunnel, which is especially helpful if you want to browse the internet while connected on the vpn.
Click "OK, "OK" and "OK".
Once returned to the main Connection window enter your username and password to connect (Your System Administrator will provide you with this).
Once Connected you will see an icon in your System Tray to show that you have successfully connected. You can right click and disconnect from this icon when necessary.
