How to configure a Proxy Server for the Windows Update Service on Vista

The WindowsUpdate client uses an underlying component “WinHTTP”. This component checks for proxy settings in the registry before establishing HTTP connections. 

In Windows XP you used the program "proxycfg" ( which is attached to this article ).  You may download it and use this on Vista if you wish.......... 

To integrate your personal ( from Internet Explorer ) proxy settings into the WinHTTP component, use the proxycfg tool:

• open a command prompt
• type 'proxycfg –d', this will show you the proxy settings currently used by Windows Update services. There is a big chance that the 'Flag' setting will show 'PROXY_TYPE_DIRECT'
• now, to copy your 'user settings' into the 'service settings', just type 'proxycfg –u' at the command prompt.
• Your settings should now be copied.

Still, a better way to achieve this is to use the "netsh" command in Vista.  See the Tips n Tricks article HERE

This registry hack fixes a bug where you obtain a temporary 90 day license from a Windows 2000 Server.

If you do get a temporary license it stops you from logging on to the Terminal Server. This fix removes the Temporary license.
